Experiencing iPod: iPod Subway Maps

Jobs never ceases to point out that “In the end, it’s all about the music” when presenting any news regarding iTunes, the iTunes Music Store, or the iPod. While music, rightfully, is the core of the iPod phenomenon, there are some nifty uses for the iPod beyond “just” music, and I’m not talking about videos or photos. Well, not directly, that is.

Some people come up with fantastic ideas for utilizing the iPod’s features in ways that make every gadget geek smile. One of my favorites are the surprisingly simple, yet amazingly useful subway maps found on iPodSubwayMaps.com these guys offer subway maps for numerous cities the world over. The maps are packaged as sets of pictures that fit perfectly on an iPod’s screen, so you just download the desired map, import its set of pictures into iPhoto, and sync them to your iPod via iTunes.

There is just one very minor drawback: while all maps are available in perfect size for the iPod photo (220×176) and some even in smaller sizes for the iPod nano (176 x 132), as of this writing, only the Chicago, New York City, and Tokyo maps are also offered in the bigger iPod 5G resolution of 320 x 240. But it’s probably just a question of time until other maps are available at that size, and it doesn’t really have any serious impact on the usefulness of the maps, anyway. And, of course, all these maps are free, so who’s to complain?

Now, let’s see if anyone comes up with a map of Frankfurt, Germany, in time for next year’s Musik Messe!
